A recent Department of Energy award to support drilling efforts highlights the potential and further understanding of the volcanic heat source and hydrothermal system.  In 2027, a large geophysical data collection effort will take place on Augustine, including airborne electromagnetics, ground-based magnetotellurics and gravity, and drone-based magnetics and thermal infrared.  Plans are being developed to collect regional-scale magnetotelluric and gravity surveys in the interior of Alaska to help locate areas of interest.

The 2026 Geothermal Rising Conference in Houston was remarkable in many ways. Many attendees noted a different vibe at this year’s conference, a sense that we are entering a new phase. As Patrick Hanson wrote: “The crossover between geothermal and O&G is no longer theoretical. Directional drilling, completions, subsurface characterization, well construction, stimulation, project development and the culture of learning through repeated field execution are all increasingly relevant.”
