GRC Educational Workshops

The GRC develops and convenes special meetings, workshops, conferences, courses, and symposia on a full range of subjects pertaining to geothermal exploration, development, and utilization.

Specific topics have included: Drilling, Economics, Environmental Aspects, Financing, Geochemistry, Geology, Geophysics, Heat Pumps, Legal Aspects, Management, Non-Electric Uses and Reservoir Engineering. The GRC also periodically schedules a basic Introductory Course on Geothermal Energy.

GRC Workshop at UC Davis - July 19 & 20

A workshop, sponsored by the GRC, will be held July 19 & 20, 2012 at the University of California, Davis in Northern California. This is after the California Geothermal Energy Collaborative (CGEC) Forum on July 17, and a tour of the Geysers (CGEC/GRC Attendees) on July 18.

Recent Advances in Geothermal Geochemistry Workshop (two-days)

Speakers include: Bill Bourcier, Bill Glassley, Paul Hirtz, B. Mack Kennedy, Joseph Moore, Mark Reed , Gene Suemnicht and Robert Zierenberg.

Experts from industry and academia will discuss the interpretation of water and gas analyses, including isotopes and the noble gases, hydrothermal alteration in geothermal systems, fluid –geochemical modeling and water-rock interactions, wellbore scaling, and the recovery of minerals from geothermal waters.

Pre-Annual Meeting Workshops
- September 28 & 29

Two workshops will be held September 28 & 29, 2012 at the Peppermill Resort Spa in Reno, Nevada, USA.

Drilling Workshop (two-days)

Led by Bill Livesay, AltaRock Energy Inc.

Objective: The purpose of the Drilling Workshop is to discuss and explain the development and implementation of a drilling plan for economic drilling of hydrothermal and Engineered Geothermal System wells and to understand the design criteria and its limitations.

Reservoir Stimulation Workshop (two-days)

Led by Ahmad Ghassemi, Texas A&M University

Objective: The purpose of the Reservoir Stimulation workshop is to provide the attendees a good working knowledge of geothermal reservoir stimulation principles.

In particular, the following issues will be covered by the instructors who will be drawn from industry (geothermal and petroleum) and academic institutions. The aim of the Reservoir Stimulation Workshop is to provide the attendees a good working knowledge of the geothermal reservoir stimulation principles.

The need for stimulation to increase productivity of marginal hydrothermal wells, EGS, etc. Fundamental aspects of reservoir stimulation. Theoretical rock and fracture mechanics, tensile versus shear fracturing, thermal stimulation, acidizing. Reservoir stimulation modeling. Practical aspects of stimulation, service providers, monitoring, interpretation. Induced seismicity and its role in reservoir stimulation and characterization.

The workshop will be oriented towards education rather than a venue for general presentation and discussion.
