Job Summary (includes but is not limited to the following, other duties may be assigned)

Responsible for a full range of activities, which will ensure the operational effectiveness of all the Calpine Plant assets.  Will be responsible for building profiles and creating financial models to optimize the Plant asset’s productivity.  Will focus on identifying opportunities for cost improvements, and manage projects to meet the cost improvement objectives.  Will prepare cost estimates of new or special projects for establishing selling prices and production forecasts.

The efforts managed by the Asset Management Analyst provide consistent implementation of activities based on data collection and analysis throughout operations, improving operational reliability and efficiency. May analyze and put systems in place to maintain or enhance operational effectiveness. Will design and document workflow and make appropriate recommendations that will positively impact operational effectiveness and will track and analyze business unit trends to in turn make appropriate recommendations that will positively impact the unit.

ISGS is seeking to hire an Associate Research Scientist, Engineering to develop and review engineering designs and models of geothermal systems.  Position is based in Champaign, Illinois.

Duties & Responsibilities:
Serve as the lead engineer and discipline expert on multi-scale geothermal projects from single buildings to large district-scale systems.
Act as the technical specialist competent in the design and analysis of geothermal bore fields and geothermal ground modeling simulations within a multi-disciplined engineering and construction environment.
Oversee the planning and completion of subsurface investigations for geothermal projects involving field and laboratory activities, including geothermal borehole in-situ testing.
Manage multi-disciplinary project teams that may include researchers, private subcontractors, and stakeholders.
Identify relevant research needs in the geothermal discipline and pursue new research opportunities.
Pursue externally funded research projects by preparing and writing contract and grant proposals.
Serve as principal investigator, co-principal investigators, and senior personnel on geothermal research and development projects.
Write geothermal engineering reports, including technical drawings and design specifications, and scholarly research papers.
Mentor early career engineering and geoscience professionals, including graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.
Respond to requests for technical information and provide professional expertise to government agencies, non-governmental organizations, academia, industry, and the public.
Attend, participate in, and contribute to meetings, conferences, and workshops.

Minimum Qualifications:  Ph.D. degree in geothermal engineering, geological engineering, geotechnical engineering, or related engineering discipline. Alternate degree fields will be considered depending on experience as it relates to this position. At least five years’ professional experience. Expert knowledge of energy modeling for buildings and thermal energy networks (e.g., TRNSYS and DOE codes). Experience developing numerical simulations and computer codes (e.g., Python) including the use of high-performance computing (HPC). Experience in engineering report writing and preparing contract proposals and documents. Experience utilizing and developing databases.  Valid driver's license.  Preferred Qualifications: Expert knowledge of groundwater flow models (e.g., DOE codes, MODFLOW, or FEFLOW). Experience developing Building Heating and Cooling Load Modeling and Life Cycle Cost Analysis to support design development and alternatives analysis. Expert knowledge of borehole heat exchanger and geothermal design, modeling, and simulation software (e.g., GLD, GHLEPro, COMSUL, Modelica, and DOE codes). Certified Geothermal Designer and Licensed or immediately eligible for licensure (within 6 months of employment).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  Ability to effectively manage research as a principal investigator and supervise and mentor associated personnel. Demonstrated ability to perform effectively in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple and varying priorities with stringent deadlines, under minimal supervision. Work Environment: The work of this position takes place primarily in an office setting with occasional work in a field setting. Travel is required to attend meetings and perform fieldwork including overnight travel for up to one work week at a time. Position involves domestic and international travel. Fieldwork may be under adverse conditions (e.g., inclement weather, remoteness, moderate physical exertion). Position involves lifting and manipulating field equipment and other items weighing up to 50 pounds over uneven terrain. A security clearance may be required to access some field sites.

Appointment Information: This is a full-time academic professional appointment.  The starting date is negotiable and the salary is commensurate with experience.  The minimum starting salary is $100,000.

As Bedrock Energy’s first Field Service hire, you will be responsible for ensuring the maintenance, safety, reliability, and function of our proprietary drilling and other field technologies, including a unique coiled tubing rig. Responsibilities

• Under general supervision, maintain, diagnose and repair a variety of equipment including; diesel engines, transmissions, drivetrain components, winches, high pressure pumps, centrifugal pumps, sand conveyor systems, air compressors, microprocessor controls, electro-mechanical equipment, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, mobile/overhead cranes, wellhead attachments and pressure equipment, gearboxes, PTO's, generators, chemical metering systems, 12/24v electrical systems, equipment cabs and controls, chassis and suspension, rims, tires and wheels, forklifts, A/C systems, and a variety of other energy services equipment
• Perform preventive/predictive maintenance procedures on Bedrock equipment and any inspections required by the company or government entities

Geothermal energy is a massive renewable energy resource sitting below our feet. There is 2,300 times more energy in geothermal heat in the ground than in oil, gas, coal, and methane combined. However, historically it’s been hard to find and expensive to develop. Zanskar is changing that. Our team of geoscientists, data scientists, seismologists, and developers are building new exploration and development tools to make geothermal a scaled contributor to a fully carbon-free electrical grid.

Field data is Zanskar’s life blood; we rely on accurate and precise field measurements to make exploration and development decisions. Our 2 or 3-person field teams, comprised of geologic and equipment technicians, work with our field geologists and staff geoscientists on geothermal exploration projects using a variety of geology, geochemistry, and shallow-drilling methods.

The Geologic Technician position’s primary responsibility is to ensure scientific field methods and sampling are being performed to the highest standards. Additionally, they will be required to assist other team members with daily field operations to include operating and maintaining vehicles, UTVs, and light mechanical equipment/tools.

Field Requirements:

- At least 18 years old.

- Be eligible to work in the U.S.

- Valid driver’s license without any major infractions in the last three years. 

- High School diploma, GED, or equivalent.

- Commitment to working safely and ensuring the safety of co-workers.

- Possess a high degree of accuracy, integrity, and attention to detail.

- Must be self-motivated and work with minimum direct supervision in small, remote teams. 

- Able to commute long distances (300+ miles) and work for extended periods, 14-day rotations.

- Comfortable working outdoors continuously in the elements to a high operational tempo.

- Ability to perform physical labor and other strenuous physical tasks; to include, but not limited to, periodic bending and kneeling and lifting, pushing, and pulling 50 lbs. 

- Must be able to read, write, and speak English at a level which will permit the employee to accurately understand and communicate information to perform the job duties safely and efficiently.

- Possess good mechanical and technical aptitude, with competency operating and maintaining vehicles and equipment.

- Comfortable using a GPS and navigating in remote settings.

- Excellent communication, problem-solving skills, professionalism. 

- Proficient computer skills (Google platform).

Qualifications:

- Practical experience in scientific field methods and sampling in remote/wilderness environments.

- Higher education and/or experience in geology, environmental science, forestry, field biology, or related fields.

- Can safely operate and maintain company equipment, such as diesel trucks, trailers, and UTVs.

- Experience safely operating various light mechanical equipment and hand tools.

Preferred Qualifications:

- OSHA/1st Aid/Wilderness safety training.

- GAIA or GIS experience.  

- Strong desire to work outdoors.

- Proficient experience safely operating and maintaining diesel trucks, trailers, and UTVs.    

- Comfortable loading/unloading, hauling, and backing up trailers, both on and off-road.

- Capable of diagnosing mechanical, hydraulic, and/or electrical issues in the field and making appropriate repairs as required.

Calpine’s Geothermal Production Analysis group develops views of production trends for the world’s largest operating geothermal field, The Geysers in Northern California.  Relying heavily on input from the broader Geysers operations team, the production analysis group builds models to project output from the existing field, analyze the impacts of long-term capital investment options, and optimize near-term production decisions.

The Production Engineer will work as part of the Geothermal Production Analysis team in analyzing production and injection data, developing data-management improvement recommendations, water injection distribution and steam gathering system performance evaluations for optimum field development. The ideal candidate will have had experience in data-driven analytics for reservoir and injection/production optimization. We are particularly interested in individuals who have experience translating the outputs of analytical tools into field operations.

Job Responsibilities

• Design and analysis of water distribution networks.
• Provide support to the field reservoir engineers and recommendations to help maximize production and profitability of the facilities.
• Propose capital projects for annual budget planning and prepare economic justifications for capital projects.
• Integrate with adjacent disciplines to plan medium and long-term reservoir management strategies, such as optimizing distribution of injected water and production drilling opportunities.

Geothermal energy is the most abundant renewable energy source in the world. There is 2,300 times more energy in geothermal heat in the ground than in oil, gas, coal, and methane combined. However, historically it’s been hard to find and expensive to develop. At Zanskar, we’re using better technology to find and develop new geothermal resources in order to make geothermal cheaper and a vital contributor to a carbon-free electrical grid. The Land Team at Zanskar is responsible for (1) securing site control for all prospecting, exploration and development work, (2) acquiring, managing and maintaining all necessary permits and ensuring compliance, and (3) securing rights-of-way for development work.

Outcomes - Problems you’ll solve 

We need a Land Specialist to participate in all aspects of securing site control for greenfield prospecting, exploration and development work. The Land Specialist is expected to work as an expert in negotiating with land managers and landowners to acquire access for field operations and exploration teams. They will collaborate with the Land, Exploration and Field Operations teams across the company and throughout the negotiation process to ensure the company pays market prices and the right lands are acquired on a timely basis. The Land Specialist will also help the company initiate good and mutually beneficial relationships with all our landowner and land manager partners. Success will be when you have secured access to certain prospects in a timely fashion, within budget and with all land and regulatory partners in agreement.

Competencies – What we’re looking for

Land negotiation experience: Successful candidates must have 3 years of land work experience at either an oil and gas, minerals or renewables company. They must have proven experience negotiating land deals with landowners and managers for resource exploration, development, and/or operation. Some experience doing landwork for geothermal projects is a plus, but is not a requirement. Additionally, experience doing land work out west is preferred, but is not required.

Understanding of Chain of Title, Surface and Mineral Rights: Must have an understanding of mineral rights. Must have experience working with chains of title, ownership reports, legal and lease agreements and other ownership or regulatory documents. Experience with geothermal rights is a plus, but is not required.

Understanding of Subsurface Resources: Must have experience working with subsurface resources, which includes communicating subsurface uncertainties with landowners (no subsurface projects are ever guaranteed to work!). 

Relationship Builder: Must have a track record of building relationships with landowners and managers, where reputation, particularly honest dealings, is critical.

Requirements

3+ years of land work (required): work can include land acquisition, land management, title research, land use planning, due diligence, land valuation, contract negotiations, project support, environmental and regulatory compliance, and/or community engagement.

Land Certifications (preferred): CPL (Certified Professional Landman), RPL (Registered Professional Landman), CRA (Certified Right of Way Agent), CCIM (Certified Commercial Investment Member), CLC (Certified Land Consultant), are not required, but are a plus.

Bachelor’s degree (preferred): A Bachelor's degree in Real Estate, Land Management, or a related field is not required, but is a plus.

Role

As the first Product Manager at Bedrock, you will set the business rationale and prioritization for our cross-functional product planning. Bedrock’s Product offering is technology-enabled construction of geothermal heating/cooling systems; as such, developing our technology and services involves tight coordination of Technology Engineering, Field Engineering, and Field Operations.

In these earliest stages as a geothermal heating/cooling company, Product development at Bedrock targets continuous capability expansion, risk reduction, and cost improvement. You should have an instinct for quantitative business value, comfort with heavy equipment “hard-tech”, and deep customer empathy within a construction-oriented service. You will collaborate closely with internal teams to understand and document our construction requirements, challenges, and cost drivers; you will build and maintain the higher-level Product roadmap that directs the company to aggressively improve its geothermal delivery capabilities; and you will empower the Technology Engineering and Field Engineering teams to execute on their specific functional roadmaps by creating strong systems, processes, and document repositories for best-in-class start-up product development. If successful in this role, you will be the guiding voice of business value to the Technology and Field teams, and their champion in translating their deep technical knowledge into business goals.

Responsiblities

• Document and prioritize multi-disciplinary Product opportunities in terms of business value:
• Distill user needs from the Field Operations and Customer/Partner stakeholders; analyze opportunities based on quantifiable impact to Bedrock’s value proposition; serve as “voice of the customer” to validate Product priorities and course-correct as needed

• Build out and maintain a multi-quarter Product roadmap that tracks progress against concrete delivery goals, ensuring that Bedrock’s functional teams stay on track to delivering value:
• Analyze cross-functional dependencies so that Product, Technology, Field, and Commercial roadmaps are appropriately aligned and risks are mitigated  
• Ensure key component specification decisions are clearly articulated for integrator partners, highlighting where design decisions have dependencies on or implications for 3rd-party service/parts vendors
• Track cross-functional delivery schedule; flag risks, uncertainties, and bottlenecks to leadership

• Coordinate Field Engineering, Field Operations, and Technology Engineering teams in high-level QA/QC planning:

Qualifications

Applications are invited for the Professor/Director of the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology (NBMG) role at the University of Nevada, Reno. NBMG serves as the geological survey for the state of Nevada.  This tenure-track faculty position at Full Professor level reports directly to the Dean of the College of Science.  The Director of the NBMG serves as the Nevada State Geologist and will lead a strong research organization focused on the geologic framework, natural resources, and geologic hazards of Nevada. The successful candidate should have the vision and initiative to enhance innovative research and educational programs within NBMG in collaboration with other departments at UNR and other institutions in the Nevada System of Higher Education. NBMG has programs in economic geology, geothermal energy, Quaternary geology, geological mapping, structural geology, geodesy, GIS-cartography, and data management. 

The primary responsibilities of this position will be to 1) manage the overall operations of NBMG, including leading a diverse team of academic and administrative faculty, research scientists, technical and support staff, and graduate students, 2) contribute to and facilitate new research opportunities related to the geologic framework, natural resources (e.g., minerals, geothermal, and groundwater), and geologic hazards (e.g., earthquakes and floods) of Nevada, 3) facilitate and enhance external funding opportunities for important components of NBMG, including the Great Basin Science Sample and Records Library (the state repository for geologic information and specimens), GIS-Cartography, and geological mapping, 4) serve as spokesperson for the amazing geology of Nevada through outreach and effective media engagements, and 5) promote diversity and inclusion in all aspects of NBMG’s activities, creating a welcoming and supportive environment for all members of the NBMG community. The position could also involve occasionally teaching courses in the applicant’s area of expertise and advising graduate students. We seek geoscientists with interest in both applied and basic research on the geology of Nevada, experience in leading and securing major external funding for research programs relevant to state geological surveys (e.g., natural resources, geologic hazards, geological mapping, and data management-preservation), and enhancing/developing partnerships with other state and federal organizations. Required Qualifications

Geothermal energy is the most abundant renewable energy source in the world. There is 2,300 times more energy in geothermal heat in the ground than in oil, gas, coal, and methane combined. However, historically it’s been hard to find and expensive to develop. At Zanskar, we’re using better technology to find and develop new geothermal resources in order to make geothermal a cheap and vital contributor to a carbon-free electrical grid.  Zanskar has raised >$15M from top-tier VC firms (Lowercarbon, USV, Munich Re Ventures, etc.) and is planning for significant growth over the next 12 months.

The research team at Zanskar is at the cutting edge of developing tools to pinpoint and characterize geothermal resources with higher precision than ever before.  To achieve this capability, we rely on both physical and machine learning modeling. We need a scientist with double expertise in both flow simulation (reservoir engineering) and optimization or machine learning. This key player on our team will help us build new ML + optimization-based workflows for temperature data assimilation, as well as optimize field development plans. This modeling position is crucial for advancing geothermal development technology to the next level and enabling Zanskar to achieve its mission.

Outcomes - Problems you’ll solve

Success in this role will look like patentable workflows and tools that our team will deploy in the field in the next year to find and de-risk an unprecedented number of geothermal resources that can be developed into commercial power plants before 2030. The workflows would automatically assimilate pressure, temperature and flow data to reduce the subsurface uncertainty of the geothermal resources. In addition, the role’s work will include assessing the value of information and optimizing well placement in the field. 

Competencies – What we’re looking for

- Flow simulation (reservoir engineering): The candidate should have over three years of experience running flow simulations in commercial or academic software for field applications such as geothermal (preferred), carbon capture and storage, water treatments, or oil and gas.   

- Machine learning: The candidate should have experience developing and deploying machine learning models. Preferably, training ML models for predicting properties on large 2D/3D models, using methods such as CNN, GNN, PINN, GANs, or similar. Extra bonus points for experience in training emulators for flow simulators. 

- Effective communication skills: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including exploration geologists, data science, and business leaders. This includes communicating results, roadblocks, clarifications, and recommendations for next steps and road maps. 

- This is a Senior or Staff level position. To be competitive, a candidate will most likely need a Master’s & 3yrs+ experience or a PhD & 1yr+ experience.   

$90,000 - $165,000 a year
